Duncan Elementary School of STEM
- To promote inquiry and problem solving for our students through engaging and thought provoking hands-on explorations in science, technology, engineering, and math. Our students will be the agents of positive change in tomorrow's world.
- To provide 21st century instruction and technological skills to the scholars who will solve 21st century mysteries.
- over sees the program through curriculum development, coordinating, locating and supplying resources, budgeting, planning, assessing, data collection, teacher collaboration, STEM advisory committee chair, evaluation and recruitment, mini-Academy director/instructor, technology support/instruction, LEGO Robotics coordinator and instructor, PBS data specialist, math committee member, and STEM-related PD developer.
- develops grade level standard based curriculum for our students. Co teaches in classrooms with teachers as well as running the hands-on learning lab. Collaborates with coordinator in areas such as assessment, data collection, and resources. Collaborates with teachers in curriculum development and scheduling. Tracks location and use of technology tools. Loosely coaches teachers when prompted. Serves on STEM advisory board.
STEM Advisory Committee
- Composed of administration, primary teacher, intermediate teacher, sped and ESL representatives, parent, community members (preferably a community representative for each field of exploration). The goal of the committee is to meet three times a year to build curriculum, discuss technological resources and to advise as to the direction of the program. The committee will also plan STEM related activities such as science fair, STEM night, and staff professional development.
The curriculum for the STEM academy will be developed using the established science units of study along with the science components of LEAD 21. Each lesson will consist of an inquiry question, problem solving/exploration, hands on components, written components and the use of the scientific method and posses a technology component. Students will be taught the basics of science and math exploration in early grades with each year scaffolding more and more concepts. Each grade level will have a specific unit of study corresponding to the themes of the grade level. Also, the implementation specialist will work with the SBSIC to create DOK level 2+ question stems and sponges which reinforce higher level thinking and problem solving skills with in our students.
The advisory committee will work to reach out to the community for resources. Possible community outreach areas are:
UNR, DRI, City of Reno, local businesses, supply companies, TMCC, Renown, local TV stations, local radio stations,......
